Roosevelt the Progressive.

Consider TR's Square Deal for labor and anything else that might help respond to one of the the prompts below. Choose one to reflect on before class tomorrow. Make clear which you are responding to.

a) Why was Roosevelt such a popular and progressive leader? In what ways did he sound like a more ardent reformer than he really was?

b) Did the progressive movement make any long lasting contributions to American society?

Progressivism made long lasting improvements. It reminds me of “checks and balances” in regards to politics and government. I believe it made the government then and now active in reforms and stricter on corporations who do not have the public’s interest at heart. It creates a connection between political runners and the public (ordinary people) affected by their passed bills and acts. Progressivism creates a sense of awareness for society in regards to injustices, and thus demands reform.

This is just my understanding of progressivism and its impact.

a.)Roosevelt was widely popular due to his status as a hero of the Spanish-American War and his belief in “speaking softly and carrying a big stick.”After the assassination of William McKinley, Roosevelt quickly assured America that he would not take any drastic measures. He then demanded a “Square Deal” that would address his primary concerns for the era—the three C’s: control of corporations, consumer protection, and conservation.

b) The progressive movement/era was mainly shaped to improve society. During the time, the era developed antitrust laws, prohibition, women's rights, federal income tax, and many social reforms which shape the way we live and work today. But however the progressive movement did lead to World War I and the Depression. The progressive movement made long lasting contributions to the American society because of the significant policy changes. The movement was brought on by people such as Roosevelt, Wilson, and other voices which helped to bring about the needing change in policy.

Roosevelt was a popular and progressive leader because he decided to make everybody's interest his interest. Dani pointed that out but in a different way. So Roosevelt came up with the Square Deal. The miners demanded more pay and eventually after the employers were on strike, the employers decided to give the miners what they wanted. So the Square Deal worked in their favor. That make makes Roosevelt popular among the people because he's supporting the people.

a) Roosevelt was such a popular and progressive leader due to his dedication as well as his enthusiasm of the american spirit. He did what was ever in his power to make america the best that it could be. His goal was to push america into great lengths that is had never been before. He used his "big stick" when it was necessary and Americans liked that he would do what ever he could to see america progress. He understood what Americans wanted and tried his best to get that for them.

Then I guess an interesting question also becomes WHO are the Americans most important to Roosevelt?

President Roosevelt was a popular and progressive leader because he was passionate and devoted. Roosevelt had a strong belief in fairness and the goodness of the government. An example of Roosevelt's making a change is that railroad company situation. Railroad companies were becoming more competitive and were trying to destroy one another. This vicious battle had to be stopped and President Roosevelt ended the rivalry. Roosevelt offered change to Americans and countries in the western hemisphere, that is why he was a popular and progressive leader.

Progressivism had a major impact on both the politics in America but also among the common citizens who did not hold a strong role in society. Womens Rights movement had started up during the time of the Progressive Era which was mainly headed by Teddy Roosevelt. The Progressive Movement was put into effect in order to help pull America out of the problems that had come from the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
Progressivism also helped create the welfare system we have in our society today.

I agree with tanisha, Roosevelt was passionate and enthusiastic about the good that he could bring to America. Everything that Roosevelt did for his country was a matter of social justice. He saw the wrong doings of monopolies and knew that if they had been split up that competition and tensions would only be intensified. Railroads and The Standard oil company were becoming tyrranical and were engaging in fierce competition while destroying practices, thus, eliminating little businesses such as agriculture. This was a desperate outcry for help and Rosevelt had the power to put an end to the oppression. He believed in fairness and balance and the progressives were able to get a 40 hour/week law that prevented capitalists from overworking their employees. Although he might have seemed more ardent because of his lively personality he was a rationalist at heart. He wanted what was best for his country and that required a realistic equity. All in all, Changes had to be made in American commerce to make it more surpassing.

b. The Progressivism movement ran throughout the late 19th century to the early 20th century, during which leading intellectuals and social reformers, like Theodore Roosevelt, sought to address the economic, political, and cultural changes brought from the Industrial Revolution and the modernization of America. These changes marked the end of the old order and the creation of a new order appropriate for the new industrial age, in which restore the economy and control of the government to the people.
In other words, the movement improved the shaping of American society. It demanded reform by changing policies of the laws, rights, taxes, etc. to bring the order of America today.

a)I agree with latrice that TR was primarily popular because of his "enthusiasm for the american spirit". Most of his actions were in the best interest of America such as the construction of the Panama Cannal. This may not have been the most beneficial to the Panamanians but for the U.S. it was a "virtual outpost"(648) and opprotunity for prosperity. TR may have seemed more ardent in the way he used his "big stick" to help encourage his point of dedication and willingness to fight for America. All he really wanted was a successful nation.

I agree with Tanisha, Roosevelt was a passionate and caring president. Roosevelt wanted to make America better than what is already was, he made people's problems his problem. Roosevelt put others before him and many people love the drive that Roosevelt had.

President Roosevelt was known as a popular and progressive leader because he was not afraid to go after what he wants. He was known to be progressive because he wanted to expand and was not afraid to pull out his big stick if necessary. The country and other countries/ islands like him because of his desire to want more and stop at nothing to get it. One way that he sounded like a ardent reformer was when he was trying to take over the territories within the western hemisphere, he used the Monroe doctrine like it was a billion dollars.

1. I agree with Khadijah. Roosevelt was an ambitious yet caring president, this made him popular. He went after what he wanted and made things happen, even if everyone wasn't happy. He worked for the benefit of America, and to keep the people happy. He settled the railroad company situation and set in place the Square deal in which Tina elaborates on. He is concerned with the interests of the people.

a) President Roosevelt was such a popular progressive leader because he was loved by the people and he loved them. "He loved people and mingled with those of all ranks..." (Bailey, 647). This shows that he did not discriminate or judge anyone. Roosevelt was known to be for the people and he felt that as president he should "take any action in the general interest" (647). I agree with what Kaci and Khadijah said, Roosevelt did whatever it took to get what he thought was best for America. For example, the building of the Panama Canal, by doing this it would strengthen the U.S. navy by increasing its mobility.

Roosevelt grasped the imagination of the people. He was a HERO in the Spanish-American war(A war to free the Cuban people from Spanish colonial rule). Roosevelt was also young, energetic and a great orator.Who wouldnt look at him as a hero? During this time, America was overflowing with progressive ideas.Americans had finished settling the West, and they felt a nation as rich as theirs could be turned into a paradise; a model for the rest of the world. Roosevelt embodied that idea. War hero, cowboy, writer, hunter, adventurer, police commissioner, and intellectual. It was like he could do anything. He made America think that our country could do anything.

Roosevelt's image gave the people a feeling that things were getting better and better. He inspired people. If the world didn't seem to be getting better, he made you feel like it was.

Viewed as a war hero of the Spanish American war, Roosevelt was very popular among the citizens. It was evident that he wanted america to grow and progress and actually took action in making sure this happened through this passion and dedication. He was a different kind of president because took control and got things done, something that other nations admired him for. He made a difference with the accomplishments he made for america and this is why he is one of the most influential and successful presidents.

a.) Roosevelt became a popular and progressive leader through the ideas that he pushes towards the nation. In a way, he inspired people by making America think that it could do anything and as a result from that, America was able to settle the West and became a dominant country. In addition, Roosevelt was also considered as a war hero in the Spanish-American War that freed the Cubans from the Spanish colonial rule. To sum it up, Roosevelt gained his popularity because he was more of a “common man” for the people, rather than a typical president.

I agree with Cynthia progressivism movement was used to shape America society and still it or tries. Progressivism was used to help bring light to the dark dirty secrets of politics and business such as corruption. Pg. 659 states that political progressivism was less for the people and more for the mood then goes into explaining it was to "regain the power that had slipped from the hands of the people into those of the"interests"". So this being the being of this movement we can fully say this is seen today within our own political parties or this is what tries to happen.

In the United States the Progressive movement was a broad campaign for reform on social, political, and economic levels that reached its height in the early twentieth century. The movement was started in the decades after the American Civil War (1861–65) in response to the changes brought on by industrialization and an economic depression. The main goals of the progressive movement were to return control of the government to the people and restore the economy.Long lasting contributions to American Society consisted of american women won the right to vote and african americans and other minorities began to fight back against discrimination.
