I'm sorry for saying that. "I'm not a racist."

Does apologizing for racist acts, thoughts, and comments make you "not a racist?"

Lately, I've been individuals in the media use apology as a way of excusing blatant thoughts and acts of racism that appear to shock (good thing: it shows that we've come long way since 1950) the general public. This seeming trend has really bugged me over the last few weeks.

Most recently a Boston police officer who sent a mass e-mail referring to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a "banana-eating jungle monkey" has apologized, saying he's not a racist. Full Article: Boston officer's apparent racial slur may get him fired
