Today, we discussed Roosevelt as a social progressive and Wilson as more of an economic progressive. There is no doubting the focus that they had on focusing on the wants and needs of the American people. But let's compare the two more closely....who was the better President? T. Roosevelt or Wilson? Cast your vote and justify it.

I believe Wilson was the better president based on his economic progressive platform. Wilson was less in touch with a big stick, the individual,and on top of being more concerned about america as a whole, he was quick to pass laws and acts that he felt were right for the people. For example, Wilson wasn't just focusing on regulating business like Roosevelt but was able to see the entire economic standpoint including the corruption in trusts, monopoly and false advertising and pass acts like the clayton and federal trade commission acts to fix it.
I believe that Theodore Roosevelt was the better president. I say this because so many reforms occured under him. For example, he reavealed the dangers of the meat packing industry and passed the food and drug act. He also saved a lot of wildlfe in the west such as preservation of forrests into national parks. The Panama Canal was another one of his achievements.
Theodore Roosevelt in my opinion was be better president. Roosevelt's set the example for progressive politics. He was not afraid to be aggressive to get what american needed. Also his likability from the american people is what made T.R able to fight for what america needed.
Roosevelt and Wilson both made changes that drastically had to be made for the better of the people and the country. Roosevelt became the president of the common people, and Wilson the “better” progressive president. But if it came down to it I believe Roosevelt was the better president because many of the actions that he has taken toward progressivism were for the common people, which included factory workers, laborers, children, and women. Under his presidency, He passed laws to ensure the safety of food and drugs sold in the American marketplace. He placed millions of acres of land under federal protection, preserving America's natural resources. He regulated interstate commerce and helped laborers to get a fair chance at the negotiating table. In his New Nationalism platform, he called for women's suffrage, an end to child labor, pensions for the elderly, unemployment insurance, and increased regulation of the trusts.Wilson was less of a people’s man because he was a strong proponent of states' rights and felt that such issues as women's suffrage and child labor laws were issues for the state. Wilson rejected a stronger role of government in human affairs.
Although Wilson made big economic changes in the country, I feel Roosevelt was a better president. A president is supposed to help and protect the the country and the people within it. Roosevelt did that, even if he did it in an intimidating and aggressive way. He cared about the welfares of working people and their families (I.e prohibition). Plus he was very popular amongst the people because he understood their wants and needs.
I agree with Diana ....Even though Roosevelt and Wilson both made drastic changes to society during the Progressivism period,but if I had to choose who is the best president, it would be Wilson.During his presidency he tried to make America as whole and was more "people's person". He worked for the people's rights and was seen as an "equal of the people". Wilson focuses on the economical reform that helped the people out and whereas Roosevelt focused on the social reform and was more involved with helping out businesses rather than the people.For example, He passed acts like Clayton and federal trade commission in order to fix corruption in trusts, monopoly and false advertisement.This showed that his interest was in helping the people of America.
Wilson would be the better preseident because during his presidency he was able to pass atleat three laws within in his first 18 months. Each of those laws were for the betterment of the American country. One affect was the admamson act of 1916 which allowed men who worked more than 8 hours to earn extra pay. He also did not need a big stick to beta what he wanted. He was a wonderful ortaor, who could appeal to Congress to get what he needed past. Unlike Roosevelt, Wilson was not focused on foreign policy.
I also agree with Diana , althought Wilson and Roosevelt both made drastic changes to the society Roosevelt was the better president. Roosevelt had his good points and his bad points as do all presidents, as a republican he tended to be a bit liberal. Aside from being liberal Roosevelt had many accomplishments such as building and controlling the Panama Canal and along with that accomplishment he won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end the Russo-Japanese war. He was very popular and one of the smartest presidents. With this being said all of Roosevelt accomplishments to improve his country made him the better president.
I agrwe with Diana on the fact that President was the greater president from the two. Roosevelt was more interested in the common man than in the big industries because he knew that if he wanted the trust of the citizens he would have to start from the bottom. He took the incentive to work more closely with them and begin to build his progressive movement from the ground up. With his auhority and power over the citizens of the united states as a whole, he did not abuse it and inturn won the trust of many americans. This is why i feel Roosevelt was a bette president out of the two.
Both T. Roosevelt or Wilson were very familiar, but had many differing viewpoints on mostly everything. Both helped this country prosper tremendously during the times they served, which is why it's hard to say whose the better president. In the end, I would say TR was the better president because he was able to help the average general public of America more while Wilson kind of failed to relate. From my standpoint TR was a man of action and embodied America patriotism more compared to Wilson.
Both presidents were influential to the United States, but i agree that Roosevelt was the better president. He took action and got things done. He passed laws and exposed corrupt in the society. He also kept in mind the people's opinions and concerns and used them to influence the decisions he made. The president is supposed to be the people's voice, and Roosevelt accomplished just that.
I believe Wilson was a better president after the Sherman Anti-trust Act (protecting working men), Work Mans Comp., Federal Trade Commission, Clayton Anti-trust Act, and Underwood tariff (opening up competition). Wilson as stated in class was an economic progressive who focused on taxing systems. His aggressive leadership in my opinion had more of an effect on the system of government than TR’s social progressive actions. While TR had the common touch and “made everyone’s interest his interest”. I still feel as though Wilson a more lasting impact on the systems and social uplift.
Personally, i consider Wilson a better president because he focuses on one perspective at a time. He also took matter in his own hands when he called out meeting sessions with the congress to regulate laws that wound benefit society. Likewise, he was more of a compromise man. On the other hand, Roosevelt was responsible for several wars within other nations. He also treated them like they're his children and at certain times things became overwhelming.
I think Wilson was the better president because he was more "progressive" based on his economic progressive approach compared to Roosevelt's social progressive approach. Wilson's action made a longer impact as he brought forth proposals which could only work if people and nations ceased behaving in a self interested way and began seeing matters through a long range, global outlook.
Over all i think Wilson was a better president over Rosevelt because of the ideas promoted by wilson. When i really think about it many of Wilsons ideas were futuristic because it was hard to apply them to that time period. Not to discredit Rosevelt i thought he was a great president who would have given women the right to vote quicker but wilson's ideas such as the federal system surpassed Rosevelt's.
I agree with Dana that Roosevelt was the better president. I say this because Roosevelt did use the people's concern to influence him with his decision making. He put others before himself and also let the citizens know what was going on with the government and big business. Basically the corruption that was going on.

I think Wilson was the better president although Roosevelt did have has moments such as regulating factories and creating sanitation acts. While these may be great for the American people during this time. It was only put into action after the darkness of factories and meat packing industries was exposed and he had to deal with it. As shown in the spirit book and bailey pg. 658 he hated the idea of the muckrakers airing America dirty laundry. While on the other and Wilson didn't wait for anyone to air his stinky socks to help the common folk. He created triple wall of privilege to easy the economic stress of citizen to the fact where they would benefit.
