The Romans: Shaping our Inquiry Together.

After considering the broad idea of leadership and how it works in civilization, let's DIG MORE DEEPLY into the history of Ancient Rome and work together to refine our inquiry. What should our essential questions be for this unit? Begin by focusing on what is most interesting and makes the most sense for the overarching study of our World History Course (What motivates man to make the decisions that he does? Why makes him interact the way he does?). Then think of what is worth exploring. Both general and specific questions will help us SHAPE this inquiry.

Watch the clips below. They range in topic and give you sense of the range of identity in Rome and overview of what life looks like in this period. Based on these, let's begin a discussion here about what our inquiry ought to be. What should it be and why? Take charge.

I believe one of our essential questions for this unit should be, "What does it take to be a leader?" I think this question has a lot to do with ancient Rome because their controversial political leaders are still analyzed today. I also think it would spark a lot of interesting conversations in class.

I agree with Sofia. I think one of the questions should be about a leader. I also think one question should be about empire building and how Roman Empires built up from Greece. I think this would be important because we all should know this information and it would be easy to talk about in class without being too boring.

I agree with nicole and Sofia. Leadership and it's qualities is a question that can be based on an opinion, but can also have a solid thought. By this I mean the question of leadership is mostly opinion based, but has an obvious judgement on what a leader shouldn't be. Leaders also obviously played a huge role in Ancient Rome.

Unknown said...

What is leadership and how does it effect Rome? I think this should be our essential question because of what we've learned and talked about in class leadership seems to play a big role in Rome.

Unknown said...

I agree with Sophia. Leadership seems to play a big told in Rome. Also if think the esstinial question include something about social ranking and how Rome concluded who would be put in what social class.

Unknown said...

I agree with Sofia. Leadership played a huge role during the existance of Ancient Rome. I also think we should include the differances of the leadership from the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire

Unknown said...

Not to be repetitive, but Sofia did touch upon a great point about leadership? Empire building can tie in with leadership in many ways. When somebody finally is elected a leader, how do they plan on prospering the land that they now control? If leadership is so hard to gain, then that person worked really hard toward their goal. They have to have a game plan/a part 2.

I totally agree with Sofia's essential question and Maya's point about ranking. Leadership is what defined the Roman empire. I believe a good essential question is "If slavery had ceased to exist in Ancient Rome, how would leadership be different?" I feel that this is interesting because the majority of people under the rules of an emipre's leader were slaves. I believe it would be an interesting thought to imagine leaders without their slaves in Ancient Rome.

A question that interested me was how were women divided from men socially and how did that have a lasting effect on later civilizations? I think its important because the social differences between men and women in Ancient Rome did influence later civilizations.

Unknown said...

I believe one of our essential questions should be, "What type of resources does Rome have to cause people to die before adulthood?" I believe this should be our essential question because it is really something to focus on and indeed question.

Unknown said...

I agree with many of my classmates comments. I believe that the essential question should be something like "What does it take to be a leader in present day and back then in Ancient Rome? Also, does social class have to do with leadership, and if so how?" The videos really influenced me to focus on social rankings/classes and being a leader.

Unknown said...

I believe the essential question should be a combination of leadership and social class in Rome. What does it take to be a successful leader? How does social class in Rome inspire the stereotypes on men and woman today? How is it different? I think that this series of questions should be our essential question because it sums up a lot about Rome and it also connects with life today.

I agree with Sofia’s essential question, “What does it take to be a leader?” I think that leaders were a huge part of Rome. I also think that this is a good question because we already started discussing this in class and by the end of the unit, we can add our knowledge on this topic to the information that we currently have.

Unknown said...

I Agree with Sofia's question. "What does it take to be a leader?". Leadership was definitely a important role in ancient Rome and there were many points in class we discussed on Tuesday that really stood out to that question.

What would have made Ancient Rome last longer? Other than the Senate killing Caesar, something else would have helped. There was a lot of chaos and many killings...

I think that our essential questions for this unit should be "What does it take to be a leader?" and "What would happen if we didn't have any?" I think this because a leader is very important to society today and I know it must have been important in Rome

I think are essential question should be something like: How does gender affect your role in society in Ancient Rome? I believe this is a fit question because there is a huge difference between the opportunities given to each gender and the decisions they are allowed to make.

I was wondering what the technology was like in ancient Rome and how much of it they had, I thought of this because in the two animated ones about the girls and about teenage life in ancient Rome, everyone had to bathe in one place.

Unknown said...

I agree with Sofia's, and Isabella's essential questions "What does it take to be a leader?" and "How does gender affect your role in society in Ancient Rome" because looking back at the videos gender was a big deal in Ancient Rome as well as characteristics of being a leader.

Unknown said...

After watching the video "Slavery of Rome", I started to question the dependence of slavery in Rome. It seems like slaves were very necessary and important figures in Rome. Many of them did things for the Romans such as cook, clean, and even as ridiculous as it sounds, dress or do their master's hair. It made me wonder. This essential question came to my mind. What would the upper class of Rome do without the lower class? If there was no slavery in Rome, how might it affect the society? I think there would be a big change, since slaves are involved deeply in their owner's lives.

William Whiteley said...

Like Stefano said, I agree with Sofia and Isabella's essential questions. Gender did play a very big part in Rome and so did having a great leader.

Unknown said...

I agree with Sofia and everyone else who asked the same or around the same question. What does it take to be a leader? Being in Rome, I feel that this question will pop up a lot. I also would add that how far would you go to get this title? I feel that the answer to this question should be different for everyone's different perspective.

Unknown said...

I absolutely agree with everyone else,I think our inquiry or essential question should be What is leadership? How does it affect ancient Rome?I think this question goes into the idea of how political leadership catapults life in ancient Rome back then and today.

andrew ragni said...

I know this is late but i do agree with you all. I believe that it should be about leadership but i also think another question should be, What makes Rome better then Greece? and How is Rome influenced by Greece? We did an entire chapter on Greece talking about how it influenced places that followed this empire, and i would like to know how Rome was influenced by Greece.

Unknown said...

I think our essential question should be "What aspects do a leader need to have? How does having a leader affect Rome and present day?" It could help us know what it was like then and how it is now and what things are needed to be a leader.

Carly Griffith said...

I agree with the essential question being "What does it take to be a leader?" The week that just pasted, we talked about what makes a successful leader. In order to have a leader they must have something about them to get the job done. I would like to know what that is in Rome.

Unknown said...

I agree that the essential question should be "What does it take to be a leader?". I also think another good question is "How does gender affect your role in the society of Ancient Rome?".

Unknown said...

I think our essential question should be " How does your gender or class play a role in society?" because life was different everyday if you were a boy, girl, slave or just a roman itself.

Unknown said...

I think a useful essential question would be "how does teenage life effect the government and civilization of rome?" I think this is a useful question because classmates can compare there lives now to what it was like back then and see what parts of teenage society affected the civilization of rome, and how they still effect our civilization today.

Olivia Siegel-
I think the essential question should be What does man have to take to become a leader or why should man have to become a leader. The videos you showed us on your website are important because it helps us to understand what happened in Rome during the past.

Unknown said...

I agree with Amrit, I think one of our questions should be "How does gender affect your role in the society of Ancient Rome?" because back then male and females were treated very different.

Unknown said...

I agree with Jeremy C., the essential question should have to do with leadership and the social classes in Rome. Like he said what does it take to be a successful leader. How do social classes inspire the stereotypes held on the sexes today? Fairness between genders was a big issue and in some ways still is a problem.

Unknown said...

Like many of my classmates said I believe that our essential question for the chapter should be What does it take to be a good leader. Another question I think would be good is How did your gender affect how you were treated in ancient Rome.

Unknown said...

I agree that one of our question for this unit should be "What does it take to be a leader?".Leader is huge important role in Ancient Rome and we also just talk about successful leader

Unknown said...

I think our essential question should be "how does your gender effect your role in society"? I believe it should be this way because it seemed as though your gender matter a lot in ancient Rome and was a big deal to certain things you can and can not do in that society.

William Colon said...

I think too that our essential question should be :"What is a leader?" But I would suggest this second inquiry "What factors are most important for a leader?" Because looking at the videos of Rome I see some factors of a leader but I can't decide which is the most important.

Unknown said...

I agree with Mark who said "how does teenage life effect the government and civilization in Rome" but i'd also like to add how would ancient Rome be affected without slaves. I say both other these are strong essential because they're very touchy situations in ancient Rome. Teenagers don't get to make any decisions on their own at all but they will once they get older. Without slaves the "Rich" Romans wouldn't last because the slaves feed, clean and groom them. And just like a slave in any other civilization they are the back bone of organization.

Unknown said...

I agree with Amrit"how does gender affect your role in society of Ancient Rome?" This question touches base with a lot like what role do women play of what role do men play. Also, who made the male roles so important?Or is it?

Unknown said...

I also agree with many our classmates here with the essential question being "What does it take to be a leader?" Throughout history, there has been many leaders both good and bad and summing up all of the qualities that these leaders posses would be an interesting topic to discuss. Another question that would be good to consider is, "What makes Rome different from Greece?"

Unknown said...

I agree with my classmates. I think that the essential should be something like "What are the different characteristics and qualities of a leader?" I think it will be interesting to look at what makes up a leader in Ancient Rome. I think another question could involve with social classes like "How does social classes effect lives in Ancient Rome?"

Unknown said...

As many are saying, I agree that the essential question should be "What does it take to be a leader?". Leadership is important especially for a huge empire like Rome.

Unknown said...

"What is a leader and how does it effect civilization ?" Is a good essential question because a leader is the one who takes most responsibilities and makes the hard decisions. You always need someone on top to go to because the court isnt always going to come to an agreement. A leader is an important role in civilization. As you can see now in days every country has a leader, there is no democracy without a leader.

Unknown said...

I think that one essential question we could use for this unit is what were some of the successes and faliures of the roman empire.

Unknown said...

I believe that the essential question should be "What are the most important qualities that a leader should have? and why should they have those qualities?" I think that these questions ask a great deal of what is needed to become a leader and why it is so important to have the qualities. i think that these question will show how well people in class can work and what they believe makes a leader which could strike up some very good conversation.

Unknown said...

How does wealth class affect being a leader. You would listen to the rich and powerful or the poor but insiteful. Respect would also play a big role

Unknown said...

Even though I'm extremely late I agree with everyone else,I think our inquiry or essential question should be What is leadership? How does it affect ancient Rome? I think this question goes into the how political leadership catapults life in ancient Rome.

Unknown said...

The essential question should be "What does a leader need to be successful" because in the videos it showed that your actions as a leader in Rome reflected a lot onto the people and lots of thoughts would be on how does one leader keep that image?

Unknown said...

I think the essential question should be what is a leader? A lot of people said"what qualities should a leader have and what does it take to be a leader" and all of that describes what a leader is so I think the essential question should be what is a leader.

Daniel Kaufman
Gotta say this was so long ago can really do much here but i agree with sofia said because it touches all the vast areas there is to talk about a leader.

Unknown said...

I believe that our essential question for this unit should be, "How does Empire building and leadership help promote a successful Rome?" I think that this question has to make people really dig for answers and have a thorough analysis of the textbook and the material given from Crash Course. I also think that it would help to establish connections on how Rome reached a peak on the scale that it did.

What is required to be a leader? It should be our essential question because we are learning a lot about leadership and i think we should go deeper into what it takes to be a leader and what it means. Not just anyone can be a leader.
