On Rome:"It is a Privilege to Lead."

Watch only the first 10 minutes of this film on the Carthaginian Holocaust. I think the film creators make a really interesting analogy by using the word Holocaust. The term holocaust comes from the Greek word holókauston, referring to an animal sacrificeoffered to a god in which the whole (olos) animal is completely burnt (kaustos).[13] For hundreds of years, the word "holocaust" was used in English to denote great massacres. What would motivate Rome's leadership to take such action? I can't justify any reason for wiping a civilization from history!

Remember our notes on "leadership?" These guys certainly aren't shining examples of "good leadership." But they all shared the privilege of occupying the highest seat of power in all of the Roman Empire: Emperor. Let's decode the term "privilege."

What is privilege? Would you call yourself privileged? Once we have some definitions running, I wonder what you guys have to say about how (good/bad/ugly) privilege impacts leadership or whether it should? This should help us drill down into our new essential question recently posted on Edmodo.

Privilege is having something or getting something that isn't usually just given to someone on the spot. A privilege is positive because you can have more opportunities. I would call myself privileged because I am fortunate to have things a lot of people don't. I would say I am privileged because I have a loving mom, clothes, food, and a roof over my head which many kids do not have the privilege of having. I think good privileges can impact leadership because if your loving parents have raised you to be a good human being you can easily take on the role of leadership.

Privilege is the advantage that people have over other people in a society or a right or benefit that is given to some people and not to others.I would call myself privileged because unlike other kids that don't have home, parents or food,i have my family that love me,i have food, drink, and house to live.

I completely agree with Mimi's definition of privilege: that it is an advantage people have over others in a society. Like my classmates who have posted so far, I believe that I am privileged because I have access to food, clothing, shelter, and a loving family. I believe that leaders have more privilege over everyone else. However, it depends on the morals of the leader to conclude whether this is a bad thing or not.

Unknown said...

I agree with Mimi. Privilege is an way of a person has another in a society that is given to certain people. I believe I am privileged because I have a family and friends that care for me. I have food, water, and shelter. It depends on how the leader is taught by his/her parents so s/he can lead a nation the correct way.

Privilege is a right and advantages that you have over people in society. I would call myself privileged because I have food, clothing, and loving family. Privileges can lead to very good leadership because other people may benefit from your example and they will respect you.

I think privilege is the right granted by certain people or low. Like me having the right to go to school, which is a privilege. privilege would be a positive outcome for citizens due to the freedom arising from before. Privilege is the right to do whatever you want upon the throne

Unknown said...

I agree with Sunday, Georgia and McKenna. I think that privilege is something you earn and receive. Its not something that you can just have. We are all privileged because we have safe warm homes to come to. Our parents worked for that to provide for us. This also has a lot to do with being a strong individual or leader.

Unknown said...

I believe privilege is a special right or an advantage. I would definitely call myself privileged. I am privileged because I have many items that I do not necessarily need but I still have the opportunity to have them. I believe being privileged is a positive aspect.

I think privilege is a special right or advantage given to a certain person. I would say that I am privileged because I have things that I don't need that some kids don't have a chance to have. I think privilege impacts. Many leaders are people who have a lot of resources and money. Some people have the privilege of being born into leadership. I don't think privilege should have to do with leadership. Being a leader shouldn't be based off of the advantages you have. It should be based off of your character and the qualities you have.

For the first video I have to comment than the Romans were very fearful of Carthage. I say this because Carthage had advanced technology, they had metals. There for you could say that Carthage, even though they lost the Punic Wars with Rome, was going to wipe Rome out and be the "more preferable country." When Romans saw that Carthage was "better" than them, they had to do something about it or their country wouldn't so great as they thought it would be. So what they did was simple, they realized that had they advantage of fighting, also the element of surprise. So they destroyed Carthage to the ground and turn everything to dust, for it was dust that they came from.

As it goes for privilege, privilege is a benefit or advantage you get, even though sometimes you don't deserve it. It could also mean having something some other people don't have. I know that I am privileged because I have a good opportunity for education, parents to teach me good from bad, 5 meals to eat everyday, and friends that treat me good, even though I am a weirdo at times. I think that privilege is mostly a positive thing, but when it come to leadership it might not be such a great thing. For example if a son of Rome gets handed the role of emperor by his father, he might not live up to his potential as a ruler. He also might be angry that he is emperor, so he takes his anger out on the citizens or other countries, causing Rome to lose innocent lives and have innocent countries being destroyed.

A privilege is a special right. It is almost like a benefit. It is an exemption granted to someone. You do not just receive privileges, you earn them. I would say I am very privileged because of the resources I have in my life. I have a home, food, water etc. Leaders or people of high power have many privileges because of the power they have.

Privilege is having more than the necessities. I would define myself as privileged even though sometimes I'm very ungrateful.People never realize how privileged they really are because they've never been in a position lower than where he/she is. We can definitely recognize situations that we categorize as better.
Privilege shouldn't determine leadership even though it does.People with money or more fancy objects are often intimidating because you feel inferior since you don't possess those things. I think, for the most part but not always, intimation is a key role of leadership. If no one is afraid of you, they won't hesitate to cross you.

I think a privilege is a benefit or an advantage that a particular person may get. I would call myself privileged. I am getting a great education and I live in a home with my family. I think that a good privilege can be used in a bad way. It does impact leadership by thinking that you can do whatever you want for example the Carthage Holocaust when the Romans wiped out all of Carthage. But, no one can do anything about it because the privilege is for the leader.

Privilege is a special right that is given to a group of people or just one person. Sometimes, if someone is privileged, they feel honored or happy. I would call myself privileged because I have things that not everyone has or is not able to have. I would also say that I am privileged because I have great friends and a loving family that cares about me. I believe that leaders are privileged because they have earned their leadership by working hard.

Unknown said...

My definition of privilege is commonly to have a favorable right or benefit over something that others do not have. Not every person can be privileged though. In some ways, it requires respect and power. Military leaders have privileges because they are powerful and run armies. In that way, privilege is an honor. In other cases, one can be privileged just by having something. That is more common. I would definitely consider myself privileged. I have benefits some people do not such as food, a house, parents to teach me, education, friends, money, and a bed to sleep on. Not all people are privileged.

Unknown said...

I agree with many of the previous comments in saying that a privilege is an advantage that only certain people possess. I also believe that a privilege is a blessing in a way. I do not necessarily think that a privilege is always due to somebody working hard to earn it. I would definitely define myself as privileged because I have an amazing family and great group of friends and I am always surrounded by the people I love. I also have things that other children may not have. I do not believe that being privileged should make someone a leader. Being a leader should have to do with the qualities a person possesses. A leader should also be a person who has a pure heart and does not look or strive for his/her name to be known but rather a leader should be someone who puts their community and people first. As Mr. Jobs said, the leaders in the video were not true leaders but rather cruel individuals who were chosen because of their privileges.

Unknown said...

I agree that privilege is a right and an advantage. I believe I am privileged since I have things that maybe others do not. Such as clothing, shelter, food, and a loving family. I don't think being privileged should determine a leader. I agree with the others that a leader should have good qualities that they have to lead.

Unknown said...

I think privilege is something to have to earn and work for. People work for the home they live by going to work to pay their bills. I think I'm privileged because I have a home, food and clothing that my parent work for everyday, and some people don't even have parents, food and a roof over their head. And I agree with Yovani that a leader should have good qualities.

Unknown said...

Privilege is like having a opportunity and chances. Like for example "I have some privileges some others don't have" Is saying I have some chances and things other people don't have. I would call myself privilege person because I have most unnecessary stuff that iI don't need but still get. I have enough and most times more food that I need. I have a wonderful home to live in.

Unknown said...

I think that privilege is a special right/ advantage that a person would be given. I definitely think that I am privileged because of the many things that I am thankful of like a loving family, a nice home, easy access to food and water etc. I also think that having positive privileges can affect the greatness of a good leader.

Unknown said...

Privilege is an advantage/extra gift that makes you better than the rest. For example, if your parents have a lot of money, they get you a smart phone. You are more privileged than the person with poorer parents who can't afford to get their child a smart phone.
I would call myself privileged, but not in the way of the example. My parents can afford to get me a smart phone, but we all feel that there is not point to getting one at this age. Some ways that I am privileged have to do with everyday necessities, and materialistic things. I am privileged because I have an abundance of food and water. Some people have to rationalize what they have and make it last a really long time. With this huge weight lifted off of my shoulders is a huge privilege in itself.. Another way that I a privileged has to do with presents. My family can afford to get me presents for Christmas and such. Not everyone has that luxury of having Christmas presents every year. That is why Christmas is called the season of giving. The privileged children get small gifts and wrap them to give to the UNDERPRIVILEGED children.
I personally believe that privilege has a lot to do with leadership and the role itself. Just because I believe that it is true, doesn't mean that I have to like it. When power is passed down from a family, that is extreme privilege. That is probably why there have been so many bad emperors in Greece and Rome. If the role of emperor in these early places was actually earned, then it makes me wonder if these early places would have fallen like they did and as early as they did.

Unknown said...

I believe that a privilege is something special given to you. Most of the time having a privilege makes you higher in society than most people. I would say I am privileged, I have food, clothes, water, and shelter. I also have a phone, friends, and, family. It is every person's right to have a caring family but that doesn't mean they have one which makes this a privilege. A privilege could be a good or a bad thing depending on whose eyes your looking through. Just because you're rooting for the hero doesn't mean everybody else is

Unknown said...

Privilege is an advantage or a special right.I would call myself privileged because i have luxury and privilege of having a roof over my head and clothes on my back, also I'm privileged to go to a good high school; while other children my age had there high school shut down. I think good privileges can impact leadership because you can have grown up with a lot of privileges and still turn out to be a bad leader. For example former president Bush grew up in a wealthy family and had a lot of "privileges", and when he became a leader/President; he wasn't a good one, because he made bad decisions for the nation.

Unknown said...

Privilege is a special advantage that one might have over other people.I guess I consider myself privileged because I have a loving family and friends which some people don't have. I don't think privilege should impact leadership. A leader should become or be a leader based upon the qualities of that person or whether they have the ability to rule or not. A person shouldn't have leadership just because they have certain privileges to do so.

Privilege is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. No I am not privileged because we don’t live in Monarchy, and I am not granted immunity, but i have a family, food, and a house. - Olivia Siegel

I think Privilege is having something that other don't have. I would consider myself privileged because like MiMi said, some people don't have families, food, and homes, but thankfully I do. Sometimes we take what we have for granted and don't realize how privileged we really are.

Unknown said...

Like Amrit said, privilege is a special advantage over other people, and I would agree that I am privileged. I don't have a lot but I do have a family to support me and I have roof over my head. I don't believe privilege should have anything to do with leadership. Also like Zymir said just because your privileged doesn't mean you would be a good leader.

Unknown said...

Taya and Armit to me are both on the same page as I feel. I feel privilege is an advantage over other people. I believe I am privileged because I have many things that I am greatful for. Also privilege should have nothing to do with you ruling somewhere. In order to be a good leader.

Unknown said...

Privilege is the ability to be able to do or have something that others make not be so lucky to do/have. In my opinion, privileges are usually goo but they can also be bad according to the context of the situation. I would call myself privileged because I have parents and family or are able to afford to get me stuff unlike family's in Africa who may not be so lucky. I think privilege impacted leaders in certain ways depending on the context of the situation present for them. also, privilege was not always a good thing for the leaders of Rome because they may have taken more advantage.

Carly Griffith said...

Privilege is a special entitlement to immunity granted by the state or another authority to a restricted group. This happens either by birth or on a conditional basis. Privilege means private law. I would call myself privilege because I have access to all things I need to survive. Most leaders, kings, and rulers are more than privilege. They are treated with royalty and tend to receive much more than anyone in a lower class.

Unknown said...

To have a privilege is something that is earned or given to you for things you have or haven't done. To me a privilege is like a gift and it's only something you possess, not anyone else. And privileges can become out of hand. I believe that I'm privileged because people don't have even the simplest things like a bed, food and water, or even a home

William Colon said...

A privilege is something you earn to obtain, after you reach the expectations to receive it. A privilege could be anything, an item or power. But privileges are not permanent, one mistake can take away that privilege for a certain amount of time, or forever. The privilege to live in a society is a privilege, if anything goes wrong, you could either be removed from the society or locked away in jail.

i think privilage is something you have or are capable of, that does not come to others naturaly.

i consder myself as privilaged because not many people can say they live across the street from the Eagles.

Privilage does affect leadership in my opinion. If you are not raised right and don't have good education and parents like most privlaged people do, then you will not be able to be a the leader people and yourself would want you to be.

Unknown said...

privilege is having something everyone can't have or when you have a special right. For example I consider African American people privileged because we can vote. I am considered privileged because I have a lot of rights other children can't have like having a great education.

Unknown said...

1. Privilege; is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.
2. Yes, I would call myself very privilege because there are children all over the world who doesn’t have half of the things I have. For example some places in Africa they barely have clean filtered water.
3. I think that some people really take advantage of their privileges. For example some celebrates blow money without caring. Most of the things they use out of greed, they don’t need it but it’s what’s trending at the moment. No, in many ways I don’t believe that privilege should impact leadership with that being said that doesn’t mean that privilege doesn’t affect leadership. In the beginning of Lord Of The Flies Ralph was leader because he had the conch above everyone he had something to control and have power.

Carmen Sylvester said...

Privilege is a right to something. It's something very special or an advantage that a certain person or a group of people get's. Yes , I would call myself privileged because their are a lot of people in the world that don't have clothes on their backs or food on their tables. Some children in the world or not as privileged as I am because they might not even have a house to leave in. The Roman emperors had a great privilege rather they were good or bad. Good/bad/ or ugly privilege does have an impact on leadership because if it's bad it can effect the empire if it's good it can make the empire even better and if it's ugly someone can get hurt. So there is a lot of ways good/bad/ or ugly privilege can have an impact.

But just because you have those types of qualities doesn't mean you can call yourself leader.

A privilege is a special right and benefit that has been given to you. I am privileged because I have been granted many things: freedom, education, a home, family, etc. The citizens of the USA are privileged because we are granted freedom, for example freedom of speech.

Unknown said...

Privilege is something your born with. I believe you cant work to be privileged, it would be an accomplishment not a privilege. Privilege is like fate. It's in the cards you're felt with, either you have it or you don't. There are different types of privilegeds and you get them for doing different things, but most of the time a privialllages is something you have no control over. I'm privileged because I have a family who loves and cares for me, encourages me to follow my dreams and supports me. I feel I'm privileged because I have everything I need and want. It's a blessing to have a privileges because not everyone has them.

Will Whiteley said...

I would say that I am privelaged. Being privelaged is having something that is not needed to survive. You can earn privilege by working hard and achieving your goals that you have set. I am privelaged for having a good family and a good education. I also am privelaged to have most of the things that want.

Unknown said...

To me being privileged means to be blessed. Meaning to have things you NEED to survive and then to have wants. Yes I would consider myself privileged because I have not only the things I need to survive in life but the things I want.

Unknown said...

To me privilege is to have something above others. I consider myself privileged, seeing how not everyone in the world has access to the same things I do.I have an advantage in society because of access to food shelter, clothes, etc. These things help me gain access to more opportunities then people without them have. Though I'm on the positive side of the word privileged, the word might be flipped when the title emperor comes into play. People who are born into leadership are privileged with money, food, respect, etc. However, they are also burdened. Leadership is something to be born with, not achieved. The responsibility of governing an entire nation or so isn't light, nor is the power that comes with it. Leaders react differently with the privilege of power, and this reaction is what determines the strength of their rule.

Brian Clark said...

Privilege is something people get as a when they are responsible or do the right thing. Privilege is something you have to work for; you are not just given it. Privilege is a responsibility that you earn. Sometimes I would call myself privileged for certain things because I am more responsible with some things more than others. Yes I do think privilege affects leadership because you have to have the privilege to have leadership, you don’t just get put into a leadership position, like privilege you have to earn it.

Unknown said...

Privilige is getting to have stuff that not everybody has. It is good because you can have more things or chances to do stuff. I am priviliged. I have a cell phone, an iPad, two dogs, a loving family, and my parents own a restaurant. Privileges can be good and bad in the case of leaderships. People can right away assume that you are a good or bad leader because of how you parents lead.

Jade Jefferson said...

In my opinion, a privilege is the ability to have something that not everybody can have. An example would be the fact that I live with both of my friends. A lot of my friends only live with one parent and sometimes that could have a really strong affect on a person.

privileges are special rights, advantage, granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. Id call my self privileged. like almost everyone said here i have abilities that other people in other parts of the world sadly don't. Lets say a kid was given everything he wanted spoiled beyond belief given so many privileges then he became king. a spoiled king who always got exactly what he wanted won't be the best of rulers.

Maja King said...

A privilege is to have, or an advantage. Some people have the advantage to have more than the next. The fact that most people have so many privliges, they don't work for it. In Rome, they had too many privileges and took advantage of it. They did too much with the privilege than they should have.
