Identity and Social Problems

Gender

Race

Wealth and Poverty

Our course will hinge on conversations that we have about what you see and hear. Social scientists interpret the world around them and make sense of it based on patterns of interaction and experience. Which of these social problems do you think matter most? Why? Do you see any relationships between them? Why do people disrespect one another based on any of these frames?

I think that a social problem is a problem that is affects and/ or is caused by people's decisions. The social problem that interests me most is gender identity because I am facing this problem in life and I think that seeing others who are facing this problem will help me. People disrespect one another in this social problem because of stereotypes. Men are considered strong and bold; women are considered weak. With men, they are often ridiculed because if they are identifying as a woman, they are considered weak.

I think that Gender matters the most because boys should respect and not make fun of girls because girls can do anything that boys can do. People disrespect one another based on Gender because they think its ok because their parents or friends made them believe that it is ok to do.

I think that a social problem is gender. Many people disrespect the opposite sex and it isn't acceptable. Girls are often called weak by boys. They are made fun of because the don't have biceps which is ridiculous. Of course this is only one of many examples and I hope people start to realize that it should be taken care of and stopped.

I think a social problem is a conflict between the lack of intelligence and reality. I have an opinion, on which social problem is most important to me. I think race is the social problem the is most important to me. There are many violence revolving about different ethnic groups, and mostly ignorance. Society just treat each other with the same respect because we are all the same but different. We all cannot choose what skin color, ethnicity, nationality we are born with. People that judge others for their race might have a lack of communication, connection, or respect for different ethnic groups. I believe that these stereotypes would not be as judgmental if they knew many people on the inside instead of what ethnic group someone is from.

Social scientists interpret the world around them and make sense of it based on patterns of interaction and experience. Over the past five days we gained knowledge on social problems, and what they are. We also learned the solutions to what some of these social problems might be. Three social problems we focused the most on were wealth/poverty, race, and gender.
The social problem that mattered the most to me is race. Race branches out to all of these social problems in a pretty self explanatory way. It is 2014 almost 2015, and racism and stereotypes still exist. I was so shocked about how many stereotypes that are geared towards a certain race, or minority, or skin color just by looking at a face and not the heart instead. One statement that really stuck out to me the most was “ all minorities are low-class.” This stereotype just really sounded like an uneducated person made this stereotype up. Minority or not.. never should another person feel inferior to another person just because of their race, because deep down inside we are all the same. We all almost experience the same emotions, we breathe the same air, and we all have been made by the same creator.
I feel as though people disrespect each other because of race.. ignorance is a bliss.. and it is something we all have. Being born as a baby we all are ignorant to the world, we don't know of the worlds problems.. our surroundings teaches us of the world. Growing up in an indian, or jamaican, and trinidadian household.. you would not know much about America if your teacher, of family told you about it same thing as racism. No body is born racist.. or has a problem with the color of someone’s skin unless it is taught to them either by family or society. Race sometimes affects the jobs we are offered and can actually go for to fit the “certain look”, it affects how people perceive us. Is it right? NO! We all can stop racial stereotypes! We all just need to take an action day by day.. Of course there will still be people with ignorance in their minds.. dealing with life there is always going to be people who judge on what they don't know, but the majority of us can help take down racism.

The two social problems that matter to me most are gender stereotypes and racial stereotypes. The social problem of gender matters to me because I think that gender stereotypes actually do strongly influence our society. For example, we were shown a video in class about how disney movies have sexist messages that are projected clearly. Though some may say that no one takes these simple messages seriously, the media does usually follow these expectations. In magazines, women are shown to have unrealistic bodies that have been photo-shopped to an extreme. Men are almost always portrayed as muscular and masculine. It is very unusual to see non- traditional beauty portrayed in the media. I think that all types of beauty and attractiveness should be promoted more often to celebrate all different forms of the human race, instead of constantly creating unattainable expectations.
The social problem of racial stereotypes matters to me because it is something that everyone has been subject to and has also used against others. It is easy to make an assumption about a person based on their appearance, and everyone does it without meaning to. I don't think there is really a foolproof way to change the way people view each other, but I think it's important to get to know someone before writing them off as a person you wouldn't like.
People disrespect others because of these frames all the time. It is unfortunate that appearances play such a large role in the way people see each other, and usually how they treat each other. Whether disrespect occurs because of someone's race, physical features or a number of other factors, people will always have their preferences and put down those who do not live up to them.

A social problem that interests me most is race. Being a young black women myself, I understand how people are insulted or affected by this by this. I have learned that some of the origins of words, were not what you thought they were. People need to realize that some of the things they say can really hurt someone. People are disrespectful because they think that it’s okay to declare their opinion, regardless of the fact that they might be wrong, or could be insulting someone. I think that this can associate with people that have low esteem, and who have to step on people in order to boost their ego

The social problem that I think matters most is racism. I think that racism matters most because racism makes people have a certain perspective on others and they could think they are worth more value and think they're better than others because of their race. In my opinion, I think racism is linked with all the other social problems such as wealth/poverty, gender and even more through stereotypes. Like we discussed in class, because of stereotypes people can't be respected for their individuality. I think people disrespect one another based on these frames because society may have specific standards in a person and if they don't meet them, they'll be disrespected because they may not be good enough. Disrespect happens very often and it happens way too much to the point where it's in our usual everyday life routine and some people may not even realize that they're being disrespectful.

A social problem that interests me the most is racism. The reason racism concerns me the most is because it has been going on for so long and has never ended. Even though people like Gandhi and Martin Luther king jr have sacrificed there lives to end racism there are still racist people in the world today. Racism is definitely linked to other social problems. One way is that a race could be given less opportunities because of their color such as a job or going to college. That could eventually lead to poverty and homlesness.

i think that a social problem is race. i think this because people any color will judge people on what they look like or the color of their skin where they come from instead of looking at one another as them self or as a normal person. Most people look down on people that don't have the same skin color as them and they don't get the same rites as that person. i think that we should all be treated the same because we all live in the same world most of us even work together and we all have the same emotions and been through the same things.
I think people disrespect each other because they clearly don't care about ones feelings and how they will feel after what they said or did to them. An i think most of it comes from these social problems and stereotypes in the world. The society disrespect one because the way they look not knowing that their 2 seconds way from being poor or justing being disrespectful because their race or gender. I think if most people see what others go through they won't be so disrespectful and some just don't care and will.

There are many different social problems in the world. A social problem is a problem in society or within a smaller range of people, like a school. A social problem can affect all types of people. It can be based off of factors such as gender, sexuality, race, religion, and wealth/poverty.
The topic that interested me most was Wealth/Poverty. The story about the law against feeding the homeless was set in Philadelphia. I commonly see homeless people on the streets and in parks. I think it is important to help people get off the streets, find a job, have food, and eventually find a place to live. It is important because you need to be secure, safe, and healthy before spending too much time worrying about other things.
People disrespect each other because some people stand out from the crowd. If someone is different from the rest in their race, sexuality, or anything else, they become a target. Another reason is if someone has a disadvantage concerning wealth. Our materialistic world revolves around how people look and how they present themselves, which makes it easy for people to disrespect each other based on differences.

There is a social problem that i think matters the most out of race, gender identity, and wealth and poverty. The problem that I think matters the most is race. I am not saying that I believe every single person is racist or that everyone makes the decisions that they make because of racial drives. I am saying that I feel like people could get along so much better if there were not any racists. There is not, never will be, and never has been a race that is better than another. If you stab a human being in the back with a knife, they will bleed. No matter what their ethnicity is. It bothers me to know that there are people who don’t give people chances for things because of the color of their skin.Racism is a major social problem because it makes people desire to act a certain way, have specific standards for things, and it can also make a person very self conscious when around a friend of another race. Because of racism, many people do not marry outside of their race in fear of being someone else’s “experiment” or in fear of not being accepted by family members. Racism is a social problem because of racial stereotypes. If you cut any human being on this planet blood with come out of their skin once again. People should not be against each other, we should all stand as one united. A great deal of great things would be accomplished this way. Racism is something that is taught to you, you are not simply born a racist. Only people that have extreme insecurities are and people that are not exposed to different races are racist. My final reason why racism is a social problem is because racism can prevent a person from wanting to take advantage of many opportunities that are presented in their life.

The social problem that matters to me the most is homelessness, this matters to me the most because the homeless are looked down upon as less than human. Yes i see a relationship between social problems, All social problems have to do with that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable. It could be a small group of ten or fifteen people who don’t have this certain kind of shoe that is considered cool, or it could be a big population of a race that is not considered equal to other people. All of these examples all lead back to the same question of why do people act like this towards a certain group of people?

A social problem that interests me is race. This interests me because I don’t know why it’s a problem to have a different colored skin. How does your skin make you a different person. It’s really just a color. Racism leads to other problems like gender because some people base gender plus the race to create a certain stereotype. Stereotypes are one of the biggest problems in the world today. Most stereotypes are untrue but are still used everyday. Some of them can be okay but most are ignorant and untrue. Racism has been going on for a long time. It may never end.

A social problem is an issue that upsets a group of people within a community. 3 major groups of social problems that stand out to me are race, gender identity and wealth and poverty. To me wealth and poverty are very big deals. Too many americans go to bed hungry every night. Children that are born in poverty are less likely to graduate high school and more likely to go to jail or prison. Poverty is a worldwide problem not just an issue in the united states. More than 46 million Americans live in poverty or 1 in 6 americans live in poverty.

A social problem is an issue that has an impact on a number of individuals within a society. The problem that I think is the most important or most interests me is wealth and poverty. I think this is the most important issue because without a home and security and basically money, you are most likely not going to be able to support yourself or your family. It is crucial that you are in good shape physically and financially before you go and try to do other things. When we watched the video in class about how you are now not allowed to feed the homeless in public it made me think about myself being in that very situation. You need to go find a home and get an education and then get a job so you can finally do things without having to worry about sleeping on a park bench for another night.

From all the issues brought up in these clips, they all are equally important in my eyes. They are all important because in the videos the people are all dealing with different issues but they all have something in common. That is that they are discriminated against by other people. A relationship that I have noticed is that other people don't care or they are helping in the discrimination.People disrespect others because people believe that in order to fully function in society, they need to be better than everyone else. People do so showing disrespect towards one another.

The social problem that interested me the most was race.Race matters the most to me because i feel that racism is the biggest problem today and it causes many arguments and conflict.I feel like race and gender are similar because its like the same things boys make fun of girls or girls make fun of boys and native americans make fun of white people or white people make fun of native americans. Its the same thing but two different topics. I feel like people disrespect each other because maybe someone is not happy with themselves so they bother another person to make themselves feel better or people do it just to do it because they think its funny and there never gonna get in trouble.

I think Gender matters most because boys make fun of girls and they shouldn't. Boys say that girls can't do some things boys can do. People disrespect other people because they want other people to feel bad about themselves. Some people who disrespect other people feel bad about themselves.

i think that race matters most because there are still some really racist people if they are white they wont talk to a black person and thats not right because every one should be treated equal because they are the same just a different color.
