"Greening" the Ghetto...the Ghettoization of the South Bronx & Sustainable Development

Ladies, now THIS is what leadership looks like...

I know that in the clip below Majora Carter talks about how to improve the South Bronx but, I couldn't help but think about some of the areas in Philadelphia that have suffered similar histories. Watch the clip below and reflect:

What are the implications of some of her suggestions for environmental sustainabilty for Philly's communities? Can we apply any of the idea that she has developed and put to work in the South Bronx?

Majora's Bio:

Majora Carter was born, raised, and continues to live in the South Bronx. Her career has taken her around the world in pursuit of resources and ideas to improve the quality of life in environmentally challenged communities. She founded Sustainable South Bronx in 2001 after writing a $1.25M Federal Transportation grant to design the South Bronx Greenway with 11 miles of bike and pedestrian paths connecting the rivers and neighborhoods to each other, and to the rest of the city. That project secured over $20 million in funds for first phase construction and serves as alternative transportation, economic development anchor, storm water management infrastructure as well as healthy recreation.

She has been instrumental in creating riverfront parks, building green roofs, working to remove poorly planned highways in favor of positive economic development, and successfully implementing the Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training (BEST) program— a pioneering green-collar job training and placement system -- seeding a community with a skilled workforce that has both a personal & economic stake in their urban environment.

hey mr. jobs its cydeny lover from your 6th period class

i think that the suggestions she was making about having the south bronx become green was amazing. i was really interested in what she was talking about.i think the people of the south bronx could put in some time to what looks like a lot of work but in the end they would definitely benefit from the changes. the community centers the playgrounds and the grassy areas will get the children off the troubled streets. like for example when she was discussing the transformation of columbia i think that changed a lot to where more people didn't litter and there was a less crime rate in the city.i believe if the people of the South Bronx put a lot of work and time into what they believe the new and smarter bronx would look like, then why would the people have an urge to change. For the future.

I think Carter's speech about the South Bronx becoming green was very inspiring. She set the bar at a high mark and defended herself for what she believes in. I admired the graphs, images, and maps she posted. This shows that she was well-prepared and had rehearsed. All of the examples given was excellent. For instance, she informed her audience about the various diseases an individual may catch if they are not aware of the environment. Certain factors may cause major conflicts, so I think all should become green for safety and better health. Carter was very precise about what she wanted to gain and I believe all should follow her representation.

Her speech was very convincing! She could TALK, what I mean by talk is she was talking with confidence and backs her idea with great examples! We do need to fix this unhealthy environment! But on the other hand, we do need money too. But if this whole world goes green and makes a lot of money then it will be a perfect world but we all know this won't be able to happen too easily. I love what she say at the end, "we have nothing to loss only to gain!" Which that is so true! I believe that if people put more time on doing what they believe then our future would look better with a BIG change!

Hey Mr.Jobs,
After watchinq this video i realize that it is true wat she says we need a better environment. However, this involves money which is a turmoil where facing right now in society. To accomplish this we all must come together and work to help out to make the future a better place. Also i really enjoyed the video itself due to the fact her speech was really strong and actually caught my attention!
