What Gives Us Pause

World History.  Tonight as you share your First Day experience with family we want to hear what you think about the current state of the World. This will be a baseline for building our community academically, socially, and digitally. World History is about connecting to the motivations of human beings. It's also a space for us to begin to piece together what has shaped interactions between individuals, countries, and cultures around the World. If we can do that...not only do we become fuller more empathetic human being, but the emotionality of our MUSIC improves as well.

SHARE & REACT.  What is one issue impacting the world beyond Philadelphia that gives you pause? Find and article or image that you can share with others in class. I've got mine ready. The http://www.nytimes.com/ or http://america.aljazeera.com/ or even Tumblr are excellent places to start wandering around for an issue that speak to your heart and mind. Memes welcome.

I agree right along with MyJae. It is about time that racism in this country comes to an end. People are even discriminating about hair color. There was a case about an African-American male who worked for Aeropostale. He was discriminated against because he was black. He has stated that he used to cry when entering work and cry leaving work.
"Soon after, Lofties started working at the Aeropostale store in the Oak Court mall in 2011, he filed a sexual harassment complaint against a manager. After that he says the company retaliated against him, changing his shifts and putting him under extra supervision.
Then in 2012 he was fired for, according to his termination paperwork, mishandling a 20-dollar bill at the cash register."
(http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/story/25753322/lawsuit-filed-against-aeropostale-for-discrimination)If this doesn't epitomize racism to you I don't know what does. People everyday are being treated differently because of their skin color and sexual orientation. Even if my last quote didn't stir anything this link will make you pause. When I saw this I my jaw dropped wide open and I had to pause it, think about it, and then continue. This is not the first time someone has been discriminated against nor will it be the last. Things are starting to get worse and worse. Look at Missouri and the murderous police officers. They are killing with no punishment, and they are doing it out of pure hatred. This is the true meaning of racism in the 21st century.

This article gives me pause. NFL player Ray Rice is suspended for knocking his wife unconscious in a casino elevator. Lets stop right there. When is it ever okay for a man to lay a hand on a woman, non the less his wife? The same woman who carried and took care of his children. The video was just recently released by TMZ but the incident took place last February. In the video it shows Rice punching his wife and then shows a security guard help drag Rice's wife out of the elevator. This would suggest that other people knew about the abuse Ray Rice imposed on his wife, including the NFL. It is said to believe that the NFL received the video in April. This would mean the NFL knew about the video for about five months. This just puzzles me to think that the NFL cared more about Ray Rice's career and the NFL's image rather than the abuse his wife was enduring. This most definitely gives me pause.

This 19-year old boy robbed a man with a knife and cut the poor innocent guy because he didn't want to give the money. This article made me pause and think wow why are so many teens getting arrested? That is pretty stupid of them. They are wasting their life, time, and future. The guy could have went to school, got a good education, and could have graduated and became successful but he decided he wanted to rob someone. He is just ruining his chances in life and he is making a horrible mistake for his future. I hope some of these teens come to their senses and learn to think.

Skies are tinted with blue, orange, pink, purple, and everything in between. Nature is quiet; peaceful. Birds' songs echo each other gently until they fade into the whisper of a cricket's wings, and the chatter of the forest animals hushes to a near silent hum.
It is the end.
The sun; the giver of life, sinks below the horizon. Gone is the light and warmth of day. But, just as the moon brings dusk, it will rise once again to bring dawn. The beginning.
I must pause to watch the sun as its glow grows smaller with every passing moment, finding comfort in the undying faith that it will return. It is life, it is beauty, it is warmth, it is light. It is the end. The end that will always lead to a new, just as beautiful beginning.

Something that gives me pause is animal cruelty. Personally, I hold a very soft spot for animals and to ever witness one in distress makes my heart wrench. I feel that animals are practically helpless and the fault are always in the wrong owners. There are the ones that abuse, the ones that hoard, the ones that just neglect. It's absolutely horrible to how they fail to see these animals as living creatures too. They could be leading beautiful lives as wonderful companions to people that would actually love and care for them.

This article gives me pause. 13 years later and I am still shocked. It was just a normal day on September 11, 2001. Everyone was going about their day until around 9:00 when their lives changed forever. Thousands of people lost their lives that day. I believe that 9/11 however has improved the United States' security. We have become prepared for any possible situation that could occur.
Although I was only 2 at the time, I picture the day through stories that I have been told. This traumatizing event has made a tremendous impact on all of our lives even 13 years later.

Something that gives me pause is the bullies that are everywhere today. Bullying really is not a joke. Bullying can cause a person so much self-hatred and harm towards ones self. The video that I watched was called "Teens React To Bullying (Amanda Todd)" and there is not a link because it requires one to have a high maturity level. The main reason this brings me pause is because I look at these people who are bullying others and say to myself "Wow, how could someone be so cold-hearted to a person who is either innocent or made a few mistakes? Not one human being is "perfect" and there is no defintion of "perfect." Every single person is unique in their own way. Another reason that this brings pause to me is because I have been through it and so have many others. Everyone gets picked on or bullied in a way at one time or another in their lifetime. The reason they get bullied is because they are simply not "perfect" in the bullies eyes. I think it is ridiculous that Amanda Todd was so young and only made very few mistakes. Yes, they may have been some pretty big mistakes, but aren't we taught to learn from our mistakes? How was she going to learn from her mistakes after being switched to so many schools and still bullied or made fun of? How come she could never escape? I don't understand what went through that persons mind to share her personal self with the entire world. And even if she was the one who sent it to him, what was the point to posting it on social media? Why did he have to make her life hell? I don't think he realized just how much that he could hurt someone. How is she going to learn from the mistake she made if she wasn't even alive long enough to try? Amanda committed suicide a month after making and posting a YouTube video of her story and what had happened to her online. She explains how depressed and alone she felt, and it was almost as if at that point she had already known it was going to come down to suicide. Bullies can change a person's entire life. Bullying is something that happens everywhere, everyday, every seven minutes. It needs to stop. It's not just a game it is serious, people take their lives because of bullying. When is this horrible thing ever going to stop? When are people going to realize what words/actions and social media can do to a person. It kills me to see young people thinking that for the rest of their lives this is the way it is going to be, that it will never get easier or better for them. It kills me to see what some of these people have went through at such a young age and think that suicide is the right answer. Those people have so much potential deep down inside of them and so much more of a life that they have not lived, and cannot live because they ended it. I, myself, as just being one small person in this world, am going to do what ever can to help these people who need a friend. Who just need someone to help them stand up to their enemies and defeat them because defeat they are holding them down from doing what it is that they want. Bullying will probably never stop but the least we can do is help those who need a friend. What gives me pause is seeing these things happen in our society, online and in person. My last question... When is enough, enough???

This gives me pause because there is honestly no excuse for poisoning and killing your own child. Especially when the child has disabilities. How can a person do such a thing to an innocent child, who has yet done anything wrong. How can you even justify killing your child by saying you did it for him/her. No child can ever do anything so wrong to be treated this way. They should have shame on themselves.

Although many of my classmates have also discussed the global issue of racism in this assignment, I have decided that this gives me enough pause in different ways for me to present my perspective about it. Firstly, I cannot seem to comprehend why it is exactly that people can be racist, as historically, all humans originated in the same way, and unique ethnicities only developed from unique sets of physical traits meant to assist adaptation to different environments of the world. Later, new languages and cultures would evolve, but people do not discriminate against others for these things to the same extent as they do with stereotypes and observable characteristics. In addition, no two people may ever be entirely identical to each other (this includes any pair of twins), and this statement forms the following question: "How are certain individuals capable of bringing negative attention to racial differences, such as skin color, while the appearances and personalities of all people differ in virtually countless ways?" This is one of the many conflicts found around Earth that gives me pause when I ponder about it.

This gives me pause. Its crazy how we treat people. Its crazy that people have the nerve to think they know something about something that they have no knowledge about. The fact that people. I can't even say kids because it wasn't just kids apparently adults were supporting this to. The fact that people do this, they try to put down people because of one thing that happened that the person may not of had any control over. I can not condone this. I also find it crazy that when the person cant't take the torment the constant harassment and they commit suicide because those people made them feel undeserving of life, the people that bullied the person there so sorry. The fact that we also use the technology we are so fortunate to have around to hurt people instead of using it to better ourselves. This gives me pause.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/well/2012/09/03/school-bullies-prey-on-children-with-autism/
What gives me pause is the recent bullying towards autistic children. I believe that this is absolutely ridiculous. People don't understand how hard it is to be a child with autism. The world already see's you as being different or not normal, but now they think it's okay to bully and harass you because you have a disorder that you had no control of getting. Today's society is very ignorant to those who have disabilities or disorders. They have no knowledge of these issues that some children face. Some people believe that these children are weak because of what they have so it's okay to be mean to them because they can't do anything about it. Autistic already have it bad enough they don't need to add being bullied or harrassed to their list of problems. I hope that this bullying will stop and that people will learn about autism and the affects of being autistic.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/10/07/malala-yousafzai-pakistani-girl-shot-by-taliban-under-new-threat/
Mahatma Gandhi once said, " We must become the change we wish to see in the world". And clearly Malala Yousafzai has become this change. This 17 year old, Pakistani teenager was shot in the head by the Taliban (Islamic Fundamentalist group) for supporting girls education in Swat Valley, while riding a school bus. Which left her in critical condition. And was later moved to a hospital in Birmingham, England for rehabilation and for fear that the Taliban might try to kill her again. Malala first started a blog where she describe her life under Taliban control and later appear publicly, defying the Talibans and encouraging girls to attend school. It's really inspiring to see how Malala stood up against the Talibans knowing that her life was in danger. Eventhough she almost lost her life in the assisination attemp by the the Taliban, it gives me pause that the Taliban didn't have enought with that and even threaten her. It's unbelievable how people like the Talibans exist who don't care about those around them but only about themselves.

Something that gives me pause is the lack of mental illness awareness in most schools. I believe that mental health screenings are just as important as physical screenings and no ones pleas for help should be ignored. With the amount of school shooting and other types of instances, you would think that all schools would have mental health screenings but they don't. Most of the time it's over looked. There was a boy in my neighborhood who in the past year commit suicide due to lack of attention to his schizophrenia. If he had gotten the proper attention he needed, maybe his death could have been prevented. Over thirty schools have had shootings since Sandy Hook, many of which had shooters with serious mental illnesses that were not being handled correctly.

This article gives me pause because you would never think someone would have the strength to kill their own family. It shows that you can't really trust anyone! It's sad that someone could be so selfish and kill their wife and unborn child over something (according to the article) that wasnt that deep. I honestly think that even if it was a bad argument or whatever they were going through it shouldn't have went to the point where he actually picked up a gun & shot her multiple times. Stuff like this really makes me think about how lucky I am to be alive right now & just remind me to not go to bed mad or upset at someone because you never know when a tragedy like this will occur.

Something that gives me pause is abortion. I don't like the idea of a child being killed who didn't even get a chance to live yet. Most abortions happen when the parents make it accidently. In my opinion a baby shouldn't have to die just because their parents didn't protect themselves.

Bullying is what gives me pause. Bullying gives me pause because no one does anything about it when someone is picking on someone else about their race, what they look like, etc. I think more people should step up and tell an adult if they see someone getting bullied. If they don't it might lead into fighting and someone getting seriously injured. The reason why a lot of people don't tell is because they don't want to be a snitch but by not doing anything makes it worse.

Something that gives me pause it racism because it would all go back to when white would slave black and they would call them the "N" word or boycott them and would kill them if they read or write. I hate racism because it consists of both prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. And till this day I still ask myself why does racism still exists? But I would have no clue why it still goes on and I hurts me because I don't know how to end it once and for all and figure a way for people including myself to go against racism, and soon I hope it would end for good. ~Emanuel Daniels

Everyone has somethig different that gives them pause and mine happens to be gay rights. It gives me pause that we live in america, a free country, and people are not able to express themselves without getting shunned upon. They do not have the same oppurtunitties as someone who has said "normal" belieifs or views. Why should someone be disgriminated for somethig they have no control over? or just because they view things a different way then the rest? It gives me pause that people get fired, are bullied, and arent allowed to marry who they choose jut because they are gay. It gives me pause that it matters so much when it shouldnt. It gives me pause that I have to write about this subject giving me pause because I shouldnt. Everyone should be free to make their own choices and live the way they want to. The fact that just becasue someone is gay they cannot do such things that everyone else does. Thus the subject of what gives me pause.

One thing that gives me pause was the fact that soldiers in Iraq cut off a news reporters' head. I still believe that violence is never the answer. It is also unfair that an innocent man doing his job lost his life for something we started. The U.S. bombed Iraq first, which caused this whole battle. This gives me pause because I want peace in this world. Believe it or not, this type of crime occurred again just recently. Two men had their heads chopped off for something we've started. Does it seem cruel to have one of your own murdered for something that happened under your behalf? The U.S. brought this upon Their selves. So most likely more incidents like this will occur in the future. I will not post a link to this article because it is disturbing and cruel. God bless the two reporters' family, and may this battle resolve in peace soon.

What gives me pause? Physical and cyber bullying, and how they cause suicides. This shocked me because it is happening in many places, not just the United States. I do not believe that people who are imperfect themselves should have the right to judge and bully other imperfect people. Especially because nobody is perfect, so that right is virtually unattainable. just because you look different, speak a different language, or just like different music does not make you worthy of hate and disrespect. It gives you the possibility to be unique and be your own person. Everyone is different, it does not make sense. Nobody is better than anyone else, so why are people being bullied? What is the real point, the underlying meaning? Is it to make the bullies more confident or to make the victims feel worthless? The bully's needs are irrelevant when the life of a person, a human being, is taken. That a person truly felt so bad about their self because of another person's hateful words, that they killed them self. Suicide caused by bullying gives me pause. I wish that the world would pause to fix it.

In a movie or a book there would a terrorist attack. The US would be cruel. Resources will be limited. This is what is happening now. Isis is threatening to attack and take over the United States. President Barack Obama has made a speech to encourage and assure us that Isis will be destroyed. But the very thought of them possibly being successful is a bit frightening. He says the army will fight against them, but different armie have already either lost or run away from Isis. So, could we, the United States of America be in the same spot? I'm not quite sure how different our encounter would be compared to the others. They have our weapons and vehicles too. This gives me pause!

A lot of people view gay marriage as something that is wrong and disgraceful, this is because of personal opinions and or religion. Many young teens, even kids younger and get bullied in school because they act "gay", I feel this is wrong because 1, you are stereotyping a whole group of people and 2, because if they are gay this will make it even harder for them to admit and accept who they are when they are always being told it is wrong.

There are many different kinds of bullying like verbal bullying, physical bullying, and cyber bullying. In my opinion, all types of bullying are horrible and not just one kind. I think that cyber bullying is one of the worst because it can follow you home. It doesn't just happen at school or work, it also happens at home through texts and social media. 2 teens were arrested Saturday, each were released on 2,500 unsecured bail. Late Monday a 14 year old was arrested and released on 3,200 unsecured bail.. This is what gives me pause.

What makes me pause is the crisis that's happening in Iraq I feel that you should not have to fear for you and your loved ones life.because of your beliefs and religion.further more I think that if there not afraid to murder there own country why should they be intimidated by the I.. And I am disappointed that we basically supplied them with there weapons,to help feel an already burning flame.

What gives me a pause?

What gives me a pause is the killing of the Christians. This gives me a pause because I am a Christians. Not only because I am a Christian, but because it is inhuman to kill another person. How could you kill an innocent woman and her child, her child that has no sense of it? Or a man trying to provide for his family? None should be prosecuted for their belief. Nor should someone change their Religion to feel safe.

this gives me pause because from the look all all of the news, there is just an massive amount of problems currently happening almost everywhere in this massive world we live in as sad as the ebola virus causeing a shortage of food to people who desperatly need it, to needing extra money to support your family and to secret crimes being held behind the governments back. these problems are much the same now, where people who are not able to except some one for who they are, for example the voting for legalizing gay marrage or the long fought stuggle for blacks being able to get both a proper education and woman fighting for the right to vote. and even tho we have come a long was as a society, there will still be something to fight for and someone to make some one fight for it.

Something that gives me pause is the outbreak and crisis of Ebola. Not necessarily the disease itself, but the fact that the government is targeting and profiling anybody of African or West African descent of having a small trace of Ebola. This results in more people being quarantined for possibly just the reason of them being a certain ethnicity. This brings up the subject of racism.
