Slavery in the Ancient World
Use your reading of Hugh Thomas' The Slave Trade to thoughtfully respond to the following: What is a slave? In the Ancient World what separated slaves from non-slaves?
Nghi Pham 3 Period A slave is a domestic servant according to Hugh Thomas texts. They get sold and worked for the people that owns them. In the Ancient World what separated slaves from non-slaves is by the positions that they have in the society. If you are rich or you have a high position in society you can be the owner.
Sierra Nesmith 3rd period In this article there were numerous reponses on the outlook of the term what is a slave. For instance, they were builders. They built the world's first agricultural revolution: The hydraulic system of China and the pyramids of egypt. In both Greece and Rome, slaves worked as domestic servants. They served their master and his/her family. They worked in public places but mostly on farms, as well as in commerce and in cottage industries. Also, in a Rome they described a slave as an object. In the ancient world slaves were considered to be property, something to be bought sold, and traded, an asset gained through conquest. In ancient Rome slaves slaved seemed to be an idealistic and and logical solution for completing a task or satisfying a need or desire.Slaves were used for anything and everything. Their mindset was "why pay someone to do something when they can do it for free". In ancient Rome two thirds of the population were slaves. A slave was a common household possession.In fact the article suggest that the more slaves you owned the more more favorably you were looked upon in society.Your social and economical standing decided whether or not you were deemed a slave. The higher up you were this social ladder the more slaves you owned the lower you were insisted that you were a slave yourself.
